India alarmed about risks to cyber security

Public access to the internet and state dependence on computerised systems is growing rapidly: domestic internet users increased from 1.4 million in 1999 to over 15 million in 2003, and the figure now exceeds 100 million. Further exponential growth is expected. The dependence of government, military and Central Armed Police Forces on computerised communication networks is also rising, with the national e-governance programme alone seeking to provide over 1,200 services online. This is creating new cyber security challenges for India, especially given its location in an insecure neighbourhood.
